Overview
Accelerated Reader is a reading program adopted by Chalker Elementary that measures students’ reading comprehension levels while inspiring students to read. The PTA supports the AR program by taking pictures of students who earn enough points to appear on the Wall of Fame, by hosting monthly ice cream parties for those who make the Wall of Fame, and by giving students who achieve bronze, silver or gold status during a nine week grading period, a certificate. In addition, the PTA hosts an end of the year celebration for all students who make the Wall of Fame.
Sponsors
Vulcan Materials Company is the major sponsor of the Chalker AR program. VMC provides funds for the monthly ice cream parties, as well as the end of year celebration. In addition, the company provides pencil pouches as giveaways. Because so many Chalker students participate in the program, VCM often provides ice cream for nearly 500 students during one school year!
Just Fired Pottery Studio in the Bells Ferry Publix shopping center provides discount coupons to all students who make the Wall of Fame.
Chick-Fil-A Dwarf House on Highway 92 provides coupons to students receiving certificates.
Volunteer Opportunities
Students are really excited when they make the Wall of Fame, and look forward to having the AR volunteers take their picture that goes on the Wall of Fame. AR volunteers also host the ice cream parties, which are typically held on one Tuesday and Wednesday a month at 1:30 p.m.
